Dentist visit – and related books (Harry and the Dinosaurs and Dr De Soto)
Tomorrow is our first visit to the dentist … I know this is a first that should have happened long ago but well it didn’t.
I have been talking about it for over a week now to get the kids (mainly Kara) positive about going. Rafe was keen – he actually asked if we could go as it seems he has a molar bugging him. His plan is to ask the dentist to pull it out so he can get money
.
I now have 2 children who cannot wait to visit the dentist – I am embarassed (maybe not) to admit that with Kara is took bribery of the worst kind … “if you dont go to the dentist it means you cannot have sweets anymore, but if you go to the dentist and we look after your teeth nicely you can have sweets” …. she was practically in the car and ready to go last week with this reasoning. Sugar is this childs crack *sigh*.
She will also be getting a Dora the Explorer lucky packet after the visit if there are no tears and fighting – holding thumbs it works, doctor visits in the past have been very traumatic, mostly for the doctor and myself.
Their Aunty Buzz is very special and when i told her the visit was on the cards she gave us two lovely books before we left after the week-end’s visit. The kids have loved reading them and the stories are both about dentists so we could discuss the super cool chair you get to sit in and that they have to open their mouths wide and all the things the dentist might put in their mouths (both were concerned the dentist will be putting the stick in their mouth like the doctor – tongue depressors = tear triggers for them both).
First one is from the Harry and the dinosaurs range.
Harry and the Dinosaurs say “Raahh!” (Ian Whybrow and Adrian Reynolds)
Harry first lets Tyrannosaurus sit in the chair and magically turns him into real life size to give the dentist a warning – this made Harry feel alot safer. There is alot of teeth been shown and spitting being done and the whole experience looks like a bucket full of fun.
Lovely stories, we have read a few now and the illustrations are very cute and friendly

The second is
Doctor De Soto (William Stieg)
A sweet story about a little dentist mouse.
Dr de Soto helps all animals except those dangerous to mice — it says so on his sign. Then one day a fox in pain has the good doctor make an exception. The fox needs to come back for a follow-up appointment and the Dr and his wife worry about being eaten once he feels better (he has been contemplating this too). So that night the come up with a crafty plan to put a spanner in the foxes sly intentions.
We really enjoyed this story, the writing has a little more substance, the illustrations are simple but sufficient and the story line is clever and amusing.

Good luck with the dentist visit. My mother used to use the prospect of getting ice cream as a bribe to get me to the dentist. Then when I was older, she used pride as a way to get me to behave. She’d say something like, “Damaria is such a sweet baby. She is very quiet and well-behaved when we visit the dentist. I’m so proud of her.”
Heh! I liked the praise, so I behaved so she’d say it again:-)
Thanks Damaria – it went really well, I WAS so proud of them and the dentist was really lovely, she spoke them through everything she was going to do and was so patient in explaining every tool and treating them with respect. I was very impressed – was totally different to my own childhood experiences.
Promising sweets is not the way to go I know but it was kind of after having gone through a whole list of responsible bribes that is the only one that got a positive reaction lol. They got a lucky packet each as reward so thankfully it only has 1 jelly sucker in and puzzles and things.
