Unassisted birth

Author: I wrote an article for Parent24 that was about the unassisted birth that I had with my son Caleb.
It is not a birth choice that I think would suit most people but it I think part of appreciating our differences as parents is seeing what other people have done and even if it is something we would never do, it is nice to share.

I keep going back to read the comments made – I find them both interesting and amusing to see how people perceive things and just what they read and choose to ignore.
I tried unassisted in UK with my first baby, had a total unassisted pregnancy, but after 32 hours of labour I could not do it anymore and we went to the hospital. The midwives were in total shock. I told them over and over that I was ready to push and baby is head down, but they did not even believe me on my due date till the doctor came and told them she is ready to push. Laying on your back during labour is horrible and such hard work. With number 2 I was pregnant in SA and planned to give birth at an Active Birth Unit, due the lack of back up during emergencies. But baby came after two hours of labour and was born in our living room, just me and my husband present. When my midwife arrived she asked a few questions about how I gave birth (just pure instinct) and she said you did everything perfect, the safest you could get for both mother and baby. It was an incredible day. And I’m so happy for a midwife who was so confident that mother knows best and who are free from all the fears of “what if”?
